Bingsoo Hotspot 1 🍧:
The Smelly Cheesecake, Strathfield

It was a breezy afternoon in late 2017 when my friend and I decided to catch up after not having met each other because of our busy schedules. We had a delicious Korean lunch at a Korean restaurant in Strathfield. After finishing our savoury lunch and being full to our capacity, we still craved something sweet, cold and light. Of course, the first thing we thought of was BINGSOO!🍧

Hence, we visited The Smelly Cheesecake!

Location and Ambience

The Smelly Cheesecake is located at the corner of Albert Rd, opposing the Strathfield train station. You can easily spot the café because of the yellow decorative tiles outside the café and the minimalistic business sign. The café had a rustic yet cozy ambience to it . They were specifically known for their wide variety of cheesecakes and cakes. However, they also served some savoury brunch dishes. But, my friend and I were there solely for their Bingsoo!🤤

Upon our arrival, the café was quite crowded because it was noon. There were also limited seating due to the small layout of the café. However, we were able to spot one small round table at the centre of the café that the two of us were seated at 🥳. My friend and I are quite picky individuals, but we unanimously agreed on the flavour of the Bingsoo that we wanted which was Matcha!😁 From the time of my visit, The Smelly Cheesecake had a few Bingsoo flavours including Original, Matcha, Mango and Tiramisu.

How to Order, Setup of the Café and Price

The setup of the café required the customers to order at the counter, pay, receive a table number stand and be seated while waiting for the order. I followed the process and ordered a Matcha Bingsoo, which I believe was $16.50 (Please do not quote me on this, as the price may have changed in the recent years). After ordering, I received a table number stand and sat back down to chat with my friend. A few minutes later, our magnificent Matcha Bingsoo had arrived in all its glory.

Bingsoo Presentation

The Matcha Bingsoo was placed in a round crystal glass bowl. It was filled with scoops of red bean paste that was buried under the hundreds of fine delicate shreds of Matcha Bingsoo/Ice Cream (potentially made with a mixture of Matcha, milk and condensed milk). It was topped with an adorable vanilla ice-cream mochi that the staff cut open to the shape of a flower. The Matcha Bingsoo looked absolutely beautiful🤩.

Bingsoo Taste

I remember picking up the small teaspoon provided and scooping a small amount of the Matcha Bingsoo. The first bite… Yum!! 😍The Matcha flavour was mild but there was still a hint of it. It was a combination of bitter and sweet, bittersweet?😅 (As a Matcha lover, I would have liked for the Matcha flavour to be more intense 😕). The Bingsoo melted in my mouth on the first bite. It was so delicate and light as snow.

The mochi vanilla ice-cream was also delicious. The mochi was soft and chewy on the outside and the ice cream was still in its cold state. Unlike the artificial vanilla flavour in some ice cream products, the mochi vanilla ice cream tasted organic and had an immense vanilla flavour.

Unfortunately, my friend and I did not notice the red bean paste at the bottom of the bowl until we had finished the Bingsoo. The red bean paste was thick with some bits of red bean. It tasted rather dry for me 😣. Personally, I would have preferred the authentic whole red bean pieces rather than the paste, so that was a downside for me. Otherwise, everything else was of a high quality👍.

Bingsoo Rating

This Bingsoo rating will be out of 5 stars based on my personal preferences and experience 😏. I will outline the common attributes and quality that I look for in Bingsoo and rate it.

Bingsoo Flavour:
⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5
As mentioned earlier, I would have liked for the Bingsoo to have a more intense Matcha flavour given the bright green colour of it.

Bingsoo Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5
The Matcha Bingsoo was definitely served to impress. The glass bowl had a unique and classy design, and the mochi vanilla ice cream in the shape of a flower was a creative move from the staff.

Bingsoo Ingredients:
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5

The Matcha Bingsoo was filled to the brim, which was great. The mochi vanilla ice-cream tasted amazing and was a great addition to the Bingsoo. However, in Bingsoo, red beans tend to play a huge role. So, with the red beans being in the form of a paste and tasting quite dry contributed to the lower overall rating.

Bingsoo Melting Point:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5
The Bingsoo did not melt immediately after it was served which is an advantage.
